The SPIC Panzhihua ESS is the world’s first front-of-the-meter vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage system using leased electrolyte. Located in Panzhihua, China, the 12 MW/60 MWh outdoor project was delivered in June 2025 and comprises two systems rated at 6 MW/24 MWh and 6 MW/36 MWh. By adopting an electrolyte-leasing model, the project reduces upfront investment while providing peak shaving, frequency regulation, renewable output smoothing, improved power quality, and emergency backup power, thereby enhancing grid reliability and potentially increasing the project’s return on investment.

The Conch Zongyang Energy Storage Station is the world’s largest behind-the-meter vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage system and the first of its kind to adopt a leased-electrolyte model. Located in Zongyang, China, the 6 MW/36 MWh outdoor project was delivered in December 2022 and is expected to achieve an internal rate of return exceeding 10%. The Woniushi Wind Farm Energy Storage Station is the world’s longest-running utility-scale vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage system, maintaining 100% capacity after more than a decade of continuous operation. Located in Shenyang, China, the 5 MW/10 MWh indoor system was delivered in December 2012 and supports a wind farm comprising 33 × 1.5 MW wind turbines.
